What to Lock Before Auditors Ask for Inventory Cut-Off
A practical checklist for warehouse and finance teams so goods receipts and shipments do not blur across the fiscal year-end.
Inventory cut-off mistakes are among the most common adjustments we propose during statutory fieldwork. They rarely come from fraud; they come from a busy receiving dock that keeps stamping documents after the ledger freeze.
Freeze the dock clock
Agree a cut-off time with warehouse supervisors in writing. If goods arrive after that hour, hold them in a quarantine bay and record them in the next period—even if the supplier invoice is dated earlier.
Match three documents
For a sample of receipts and shipments around year-end, match the goods receipt note, the packing list, and the general ledger posting date. When two of three disagree, investigate before auditors arrive with their own sample.
Brief temporary staff
Year-end counts often rely on seasonal help. A ten-minute briefing on which piles belong to the old year saves hours of recounts later.
Harbor Balance includes cut-off testing in every statutory financial statement audit where inventory is material. Controllers who run this checklist in the week before fieldwork usually face fewer late adjusting entries.
